Tems Is The Hottest Female Artist of 2019, KC

Tems Is The Hottest

2019 like every election year started slow, businesses and investors were wary of investing. No one knew where the pendulum would swing, like Barcelona and Real Madrid the two major contenders were getting set to slug it out at the polls. While the other contestants are mere bystanders like the other footballers watching Messi and Ronaldo win the Ballon d’Or.

Both hailers and wailers were going at each other, the economists predicting doom and boom and the false prophets, missing their targets like Yakubu Aiyegbeni VS South Korea.

The entire first quarter of this year was for politicking. The creative industry was at a standstill. The music heads predicting doom and gloom, some of us the pessimists already wrote off the year. Because we hopelessly believed no new artiste will break out.

March gave us Fireboy DML. Rema and Mavin came through, Naira Marley and his controversies, Zlatan Ibile picked up his form from where he left it last year and Joe Boy’s beginning was a bang. What no one saw coming was a female artist who doesn’t sound or try to be sexy like Tiwa Savage, or trying to do a mama Africana like Yemi Alade, was going to reel out.

I mean judging by statistics it takes on average two years, for one female artiste to blow up. But this year, everyone thought the next big female artiste would be Goodgirl LA, but like Luka Modric winning Ballon D’or this talent came and became the conversation. Including getting a shout from Tiwa Savage.

I had been privileged to watch her video before it was released and my first comment was these Jamaicans never cease to amaze me. My friend started laughing and said this is a Nigerian, and the video was shot in Yaba. Instantly, my yanga commot like Tolotolo. Proud that finally, a female artiste with a different vibe is about to give the guys a run for their money.

Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems owned 2019. Many us didn’t pay attention to her Headies nominated single Mr Rebel in 2018. The nominal success of that single spurred her to release, Looku Looku, and consequently one of the hottest Nigeria songs of 2019. ‘Try Me’.

The singer who is also a music producer is more than a singer/songwriter. Her ability to own every stage and every audience with her extraordinary vocal and performance ability are the qualities that keep endearing her to fans of all ages and class. On the first day of the Soundcity Xchange event, she was the best performer. Despite performing only one song.

What I still don’t understand how Tems is not the conversation or even in the conversation. Burna Boy, Naira Marley, Joe Boy, Rema, Fireboy DML might have their biggest year to date, but Tems was the breath of fresh air everyone wanted and needed. Just like the lyrics to her monster hit ‘Try Me’, we rolled her up in a rizla and smoked every ounce of her. I hope 2020 will be bigger than in 2019 for Tems.
