Tourism & Jobs: NTDC celebrates World Tourism Day at Bauchi


27th September every year is observed as World Tourism Day as declared by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO). The day is set aside to raise awareness on the importance of tourism and its benefits to nations and the world in general.

The theme for this year’s celebration is “Tourism and Jobs: A better future for all”.

It is on this premise that the Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation North East Zonal Office Bauchi in-line with the directives of the Director-General of the Corporation – Mr. Folorunsho Folarin Coker that all zonal offices celebrate same.

Therefore, the NTDC North-East zone brought together notable stakeholders in the Tourism and Hospitality Industry in the zone to mark the occasion.

The Ag. Zonal Cordinator Mr. Lucas Shehu Nelson who read the message of the Director General at the occasion states that;

Tourism no doubt, is the largest employer of labour in the world; even more than the oil industry because of its activities in the value chain – hotels, restaurants strategically employ women and youths

Mr. Nelson Lucas also acknowledge that;

Our cultures is evolving and the new mediums of cultural expression are our music, fashion, art, food, and these are driven by festivals and the mediums of informing people have grown beyond print and the conventional electronic media  – Radio and TV, to the new media – Social media.”

He further said that;

we are trying to partner with other Government agencies and the private sector to create events that will make people focus on the consumption of our tourism assets.”

The occasion at the zone saw the gathering of key industry players from the academics, entertainment, private and public practice in attendance.


H.O.D Leisure & Tourism Department of Federal Polytechnic Bauchi Malam Fada Audu urges the new administration to forget oil & gas and invest in Tourism.

“In Bauchi we have scattered transport system, take a look at Cross-river they are far gone! Kaduna state has made it why not Bauchi State?”


Mrs. Pwavi, North East Coordinator National Institute of Hospitality & Tourism stressed on the Marketing Aspect of Tourism;

“People would want to know more about what Tourism could do, the synergy has to be maintained between the bodies involved in the Tourism industry.”

Finally the Director of NCAC round up the presentation on this note;

‘Tourism cannot survive without Culture, it is Culture that sustains tourism, for instance when you go to Meseum & Monuments you would want to experience culture of the place. Technically i will round up by saying Nigeria is very vast but Gambia is doing better than Nigeria in my last visit they doing alot and Nigeria is following suite.”

He also noted that;

Most of us in the sector are working independently we don’t work in synergy, Please we need to work together the component of the industry must work together and once we work together we will get there!”

Highlights at the occasion include a paper presentation on the theme of the year, goodwill messages from representatives of various organizations, a musical performance by a Bauchi based upcoming artist, Dan Balarebe and lots more which added color to the event.
